CARE's Work: Agriculture and Natural Resources

CARE works with poor people around the world to improve their lives through sustainable crop production, increased incomes, responsible use of resources and community empowerment.

It is estimated that women produce roughly half the world's food, most of which is accomplished by poor women, using hand tools on small, marginal plots of land. CARE teaches skills and provides resources that make farming more efficient, while protecting the land and water. This enables women to grow more food and frees time for other activities. We work with agriculture extension agents to ensure they provide valuable services in areas such as crop selection, pest control and use of appropriate local technologies. CARE also strives to connect small-scale farmers to markets for their goods.

Case in Point: Maria
Maria Martinez Benitez Carertero is a farmer in Honduras and single mother of three boys. She has always been a hard worker, but CARE helped her become more productive. With training on crop rotation, irrigation and greenhouse gardening, Maria has harvested enough nutritious vegetables to feed her family and sell the surplus.
