CARE's Work: Health

CARE promotes healthy behaviors, empowers communities to prevent and manage health risks and helps local institutions deliver sustainable, high-quality health services. CARE works to foster change at multiple levels, from the individual to national policy.

For women, issues related to pregnancy and reproductive health account for a significant proportion of all health concerns. A child's health and well-being is directly tied to the health of his or her mother. CARE's health programs focus on sexual and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and infectious disease - all areas in which women are uniquely vulnerable. We are committed to helping individuals and communities become informed, organized consumers of quality health services, and working with them to address social and cultural practices that hinder good health.

Case in Point: Dominga
CARE works with poor families in El Alto, Bolivia, with the goal of improving health in women of reproductive age, their partners and of children under 5 years old. We helped community members like Dominga Quenallata establish groups for men and women in which they discuss sensitive health topics and build partnerships with local health professionals. When Dominga showed special interest and aptitude, she became a "star health promoter," and took responsibility for sharing what she learned with other members of her community. Since the start of the CARE project, women say they feel more confident, enjoy better communication with their husbands and have better knowledge of how to safeguard their health and that of their families.
