Situation: The Band-e Sultan dam cracked early in the morning of March 29, flooding the Khaaja Umari district and wreaking havoc in Ghazni city. Thousands of acres of farmland have been destroyed, including young wheat crops that are a bulk of the livelihood of some farmers. Thousands of shops and hundreds of houses have been damaged. At the time of this report, ten people have been reported killed, and over 900 families have been affected.
Our Response: CARE has mobilized six teams to assess the situation and initiate relief efforts. Because sandbagging will only force flooding in other areas, they will spend most of their efforts providing emergency food and shelters, and setting up health clinics to prevent disease outbreaks.
