CARE provides urgent aid and long-term help
in East Timor
With the Australian government warning of increased violence and unrest in the island country of East Timor, CARE’s continued presence there is more important than ever. CARE distributes an average of 47,500 gallons of water a day to support displaced people in more than 60 camps, and has distributed rice to more than 13,000 people in East Timor.
While responding to the urgent needs of displaced people, CARE is also providing the resources and education needed for long-term recovery in East Timorese communities. CARE's team of emergency experts provide a wide range of services to support displaced families living in camps and to help them return to and reintigrate with their communities. The CARE Child Protection team continues to promote child rights and support children in camps, while a CARE gender specialist ensures that gender issues are included on daily checklists undertaken in each camp. Other members of the team are working with the East Timorese to construct shelters and repair or restore water supplies and sanitary facilities.
Your regular support as a member of the Crisis Response Team makes it possible for CARE to provide immediate support to the victims of political violence – and to help members of displaced communities to rebuild for the long term.
