Situation: A monstrous earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 struck off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia on March 28, 2005. More than 900 people were confirmed killed. At least 100,000 survivors were left homeless. CARE staff in Sinabang reported "horrific damage" in areas where "thousands of houses" were destroyed.
Our Response: CARE spearheaded relief efforts for survivors in Sinabang, Simeulue Island, Banda Aceh and Midan. We provided water, sanitation, medical supplies and tents, and distributed stocks of food to the more than 50,000 people in need.
