Situation: The heaviest rains in 40 years have flooded 800 houses and
completely demolished 64 others on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar. More than 1,700 families have been affected by the flood in some way. There has already been a fatal outbreak of cholera. Thousands more are at risk.
Our Response: CARE teams are in action, distributing clothing, mattresses, and building materials like cement. Since disease-bearing mosquitoes thrive in flooded conditions, we're also giving families mosquito nets to protect them. CARE is seeking further funding to meet the immediate needs of every survivor we can reach — and help them rebuild their homes and livelihoods.
