On March 20, around 150 senior women executives from around the city attended the UPS world headquarter's "Atlanta Women Care" event. The group was brought together to learn about CARE, and to exchange ideas and identify avenues of how they can unite to help end the global cycle of poverty among women. The event was an extension of UPS's deep commitment to CARE's work and to supporting women's empowerment within the global community.
Featured speakers were Dr. Helene Gayle, CARE president and chief executive officer; Christine Owens, UPS senior vice president of communications and brand management and Shirley Franklin, mayor of the city of Atlanta. Lisa Hamilton, UPS Foundation president, served as the event's master of ceremonies. Panelists included Vicki Gordon, IHG senior vice president, corporate affairs; Teri McClure, UPS senior vice president of legal and general counsel; Lisa LaFave, UPS vice president of global solutions and Donna Orender, Women's National Basketball Association president. The panel was moderated by Carol Sbarge, WSB-TV anchorwoman.
The panelists represented corporations and organizations that have partnered with CARE in support of programs like CARE's microfinance work with women, volunteerism and emergency relief. The "Atlanta Womens Care" event was held to engaging Atlanta women to work within their corporations and communities to support women around the globe.
Delta and CARE Host Trip to Guatemala

Delta Airlines Inc. recently hosted a trip to Guatemala for a group of Atlanta women executives to visit CARE projects that empower women to help provide a better future for their families. While in Guatemala, they learned first-hand about the challenges women and girls face in the developing world and formed bonds with the women they met. "Delta is proud of its longstanding commitment to support CARE," said Gerry Carolan, vice president of labor relations, who represented Delta on the trip. "Beyond our corporate support, we think that this experience has provided us with a unique view of CARE's work as well as inspired us to seek ways to help."
Long-time CARE supporter Oliver Smithies is the co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Dr. Smithies shares the prize with two other scientists for their work using stem cells to modify genes in mice.
Smithies first encountered CARE after he received a CARE package as a teenager in Yorkshire, England during World War II. The package included Spam which as he recalled, "was a nice treat then!" He deeply appreciated the receipt of the CARE package during a time of rations with little variety and no luxuries. His commitment to CARE spans 25 years.
After the war, Smithies studied at Balliol College in Oxford, he then came to the US as a post-doctorate fellow at the University of Wisconsin. Following a stint as a researcher in Toronto where his work in gene mapping began, he returned to the Genetics Department at the University in the early 1960s where he stayed for 25 years. He then moved to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he remains today.
Smithies' work has been critical to the study of genetics. The method he developed allows scientists to manipulate genes to determine what functions they control. His discoveries have helped inform research into the causes of high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, sickle cell anemia and cancer.
Smithies believes there is a connection between his lifetime of research and CARE's mission. "Doing science is a humanitarian endeavor just as the work CARE does benefits people," said Smithies. When asked about his commitment to CARE, he explained, "CARE is very successful because it goes where there is a need and helps people help themselves. CARE shows great thought in what emergencies it chooses to address and it is an organization that is frugal with money. A high percentage of money raised goes directly to program support. It's a marvelous organization."
ZOOMA Women's Race Series, a new national series of women's running events has chosen CARE as its National Charity Partner for 2008. The partnership will create a link between ZOOMA runners and I Am Powerful, CARE's campaign to engage women in the US in the lives of impoverished women around the world.
The first race in the series will take place in Annapolis, MD in June, followed by a race in Atlanta, GA in November. To form your own CARE running team, see www.zoomarun.com.
The Anniversary Celebration is an annual commemorative event in Washington, DC, and CARE's only national fundraiser. The event highlights CARE's humanitarian work and raises the important funds that make our work possible. This year's theme, "The Power of Partnerships," underscores the importance CARE places on working in collaboration with communities and donors to find lasting solutions to poverty.
