School Days Resume in Afghanistan by Alina Labrada, CARE Press Officer

Photo by Alina Labrada © CARE 2002. This was the first day of school for first graders at Shakar Dara school in the village of Soliaman. Until CARE began helping support education in the village, residents did not have a way to get textbooks or other school materials. The village, on the outskirts of Kabul province, hopes to add more grades to the school in the future. CARE opens eight to ten schools every month across seven provinces in southeast Afghanistan, with new grades added to existing schools every month. All photos by Alina Labrada © CARE 2002.

Photo by Alina Labrada © CARE 2002. A new and changing environment in Afghanistan is bringing more opportunities for girls like Nasia, 11 years old, to go to school. Her first grade class includes girls and boys ranging from 6 to 12 years old. Because of Taliban rules and the effects of poverty, these children didn't have a chance to go to school before.
